This is the camp. Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont. The barn swallows fledged out of the shed sometime last week. The rafters are quiet now. The dogs noticed first.
It was Tuesday, July 28th. It was eighty and thickening in Camp Puppy Haven, rain coming by afternoon. We were working the day watch out of Shed Rafter Watch. My partner's The Goose. The boss is Lieutenant Fenn. My name's Puppy.
A man stood in the shed doorway a long while looking up at the empty mud cup. He said the summer was going fast. It was going the same speed as always.
