Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont. The dirt road, soft again from the rain. The mailboxes leaning at the corner. The honor stand, cash box out in the weather. A gray sky low over all of it, in no hurry. Last on the list, the dogs.
It was Thursday, July 30th. It was gray and cool in Camp Puppy Haven, the rain holding off. We were working the day watch out of Low-Sky Detail. My partner's Doris. The boss is Captain Vera. My name's Puppy.
A woman canceled the cookout, then uncanceled it, then went out to check the sky again. Her dog had already decided the day was fine.
