Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont. The town garage. The pump house. The fire pond, down a foot since Wednesday. The dirt road that connects all of it, graded at six this morning before the heat came. The dogs run the whole circuit twice a day and file nothing.
It was Monday, July 27th. It was fifty-six degrees at dawn in Camp Puppy Haven, clear, headed for the low eighties. We were working the day watch out of Grader Escort Detail. My partner's Murph. The boss is Lieutenant Biscuit. My name's Puppy.
A woman checked the radar four times before breakfast. The forecast hadn't changed. The dogs were already outside in the day it described.
