Today's field note from Sgt. Puppy and the morning watch at Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont.

Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont. The swimming hole off the town highway. The ballfield with the lights that only half work. The bug zapper on the store porch, doing overtime. And the dogs, under the porch, where it's cool.
It was Wednesday, July 8th. It was hot and close in Camp Puppy Haven, thunderheads building by three. We were working the day watch out of Nap Enforcement. My partner's Murph. The boss is Lieutenant Hatch. My name's Puppy.
A woman was out watering the tomatoes. The rain was twenty minutes out. The tomatoes already knew. We did not interfere.
Sgt. Puppy's Field Notes are published most weekday mornings.
