The brook came up overnight and took somebody's canoe with it. A neighbor found it a half-mile down, tied it to a fencepost, and posted a photo asking around. This is Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont.
It was Tuesday, July 7th. Rain since dawn, cool for July. We were working the day watch out of Puddle Reconnaissance. My partner's Doris. The boss is Lieutenant Birch. My name's Puppy.
A woman kept refreshing the radar. The rain was going to do what it was going to do. Doris had already made her peace with wet.
