It was Thursday, July 9th. It was eighty-seven and hazy in Camp Puppy Haven. We were working the day watch out of the Shade Allocation Bureau. My partner's Dave. He's new. The boss is Lieutenant Hatch. My name's Puppy.
A woman stood in the sun checking her phone for the temperature. The shade was ten feet away. We were already in it.
