This is the camp. Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont. The Fourth is over. The sky went gray and soft, like the town asked for the quiet back. The dogs never gave it up.
It was Monday, July 6th. It was gray and mild in Camp Puppy Haven, the heat finally broken. We were working the day watch out of Dropped-Hot-Dog Recovery. My partner's Teddy. The boss is Lieutenant Soot. My name's Puppy.
A man stood in the yard counting folding chairs, tallying what the weekend cost him. Teddy had already recovered the one dropped hot dog. Case closed.
