This is the camp. Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont. There's one log splitter in town and you rent it by the weekend. It's been at four driveways since Saturday. Nobody's in a hurry. Everybody's counting.
It was Tuesday, August 25th. It was seventy-one and partly sunny in Camp Puppy Haven. Good working weather. We were working the day watch out of Splitter Queue Detail. My partner's Murph. The boss is Captain Fenn. My name's Puppy.
A man stood looking at four stacked cords and said he was behind. The wood disagreed. So did Murph.
