Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont. The dirt road in. The town garage. A worker weed-whacking around the stored snow plows. The brook down to stones. Past that, it's us.
It was Wednesday, August 26th. It was fifty-four at dawn in Camp Puppy Haven, mild by noon, the sun coming and going. We were working the day watch out of Long Shadow Detail. My partner's Dave. He's new. He brought a stuffed penguin. The boss is Captain Fido. My name's Puppy.
A woman stood at the edge of her garden, adding up how much summer was left. The tomatoes weren't counting. Neither were we.
