Somebody cut the long field Tuesday. Three days of sun since, no rain, and the whole valley smells like July. This is Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont.
It was Thursday, July 2nd. It was ninety-two degrees in Camp Puppy Haven, clear and still. We were working the day watch out of Cut Field Patrol. My partner's Murph. The boss is Captain Burl. My name's Puppy.
A man kept refreshing the forecast. Rain, Saturday, for the picnic. It was ninety-two and perfect today, and he was two days gone already. Murph and I stayed in the field.
