It was Friday, July 3rd. It was hot and hotter in Camp Puppy Haven, sky threatening in the west. We were working the afternoon watch out of Firework Prep Overwatch. My partner's Dave. He's new. He brought a phone. The boss is Lieutenant Vera. My name's Puppy.
A boy was testing bottle rockets in the driveway, one at a time, for practice. Every dog on the road heard them before he did. Tomorrow's going to be a long one.
