A girl has been walking a steer up and down the Ridge Road every evening since the first of the month, practicing for the fair. The steer sets the pace. Traffic has adjusted. This is Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont.
It was Wednesday, August 19th. It was seventy-eight and half sunny in Camp Puppy Haven, cool coming on after supper. We were working the evening watch out of Halter Training Liaison. My partner's Dave. The boss is Lieutenant Soot. My name's Puppy.
A man behind the wheel checked the clock twice in a quarter mile. The animal ahead of him had never once wondered what time it was.
