Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont. The garage with two bays and one lift. The ballfield mowed all summer for eleven kids. The culvert the town's been arguing about since March. The crickets that start at the edge of all of it around eight. Then the dogs.
It was Tuesday, August 18th. It was warm and close in Camp Puppy Haven, thunder somewhere south of the ridge. We were working the evening watch out of Dusk Chorus Detail. My partner's Doris. The boss is Captain Burl. My name's Puppy.

Sgt. Puppy's Field Notes are published most weekday mornings.
