This is the camp. Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont. The first apples came down in the night, small and green and early. The driveway smells like cider already. Nobody planted that tree.
It was Monday, August 17th. It was cloudy and mild in Camp Puppy Haven, the rain holding off. We were working the day watch out of Windfall Detail. My partner's Murph. The boss is Commander Ella. My name's Puppy.
A woman counted the apples on the ground, then did math about the ones still up in the tree. Murph ate one off the gravel and stopped thinking about apples entirely.
