Today's field note from Sgt. Puppy and the morning watch at Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont.

This is the camp. Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont. The hummingbirds have gone frantic at the feeder, four of them fighting over a thing that holds enough for forty. In three weeks they'll be gone. Nobody told them to hurry. They're hurrying anyway.
It was Thursday, August 20th. It was overcast and cool in Camp Puppy Haven, fifty-three at dawn. We were working the day watch out of Departure Schedule Detail. My partner's The Goose. The boss is Lieutenant Vera. My name's Puppy.
A woman stood at the window with her coffee going cold, timing how long each bird stayed. Four seconds. Then three. She said they were running out of time. Nobody at the feeder had mentioned it.
Sgt. Puppy's Field Notes are published most weekday mornings.
