A pumpkin appeared on the front steps of the yellow house by the bend. On a Thursday in early September. It was eighty-one degrees. This is Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont.
It was Friday, September 4th. It was warm in Camp Puppy Haven, cool down by the brook, first color coming into the maples. We were working the day watch out of Premature Autumn Detail. My partner's Doris. The boss is Commander Ella. My name's Puppy.
The woman checks that pumpkin from the kitchen window like it's going to hurry the season along. The maples keep their own calendar. Doris and I found the sun on the porch boards and stayed in it.
