Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont. The dirt road in. The general store. The Grange Hall, with a supper posted for the twelfth. The creemee stand, hand-lettered sign, open through Labor Day. Then it's us.
It was Thursday, September 3rd. It was overcast and mild in Camp Puppy Haven, low cloud on the hill all day. We were working the evening watch out of Last Cone Detail. My partner's The Goose. The boss is Commander Wren. My name's Puppy.
A man in line had done the math and announced there were five cones left in the season. The Goose had done no math. The Goose was in line.
