Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont. The pond at the bottom of the hill, still holding July's rain. The ballfield, mowed for nothing now since school popped open. The dirt road between them. The dogs, wherever the sun is.
It was Monday, August 31st. It was seventy-six and partly sunny in Camp Puppy Haven, cool by dark. We were working the day watch out of Last Warm Water Detail. My partner's Murph. The boss is Captain Fig. My name's Puppy.
A woman stood on the dock with a list of everything summer was supposed to have been. The water was still warm enough. Murph went in first.
