Somebody set a dresser at the end of the driveway with FREE taped to the top drawer. By noon there was a lamp on it. By four there was a chair beside it. Nobody has taken anything yet. This is Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont.
It was Friday, August 14th. It was fifty degrees at dawn in Camp Puppy Haven and clear all day. We were working the day watch out of Free Pile Detail. My partner's Dave. He's new. He brought a stuffed moose. The boss is Lieutenant Hazel. My name's Puppy.
A man drove past the free pile twice before he stopped, and then he only looked. He was doing arithmetic about a chair he did not need. The dogs had been lying in its shade since noon. Shade doesn't require a decision.
