An empty school bus came up the hill Monday morning, turned around at the top, and went back down. The driver was timing the route. Nobody's children are on it yet. This is Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont.
It was Monday, August 10th. It was mild and overcast in Camp Puppy Haven, cool enough at dawn for a jacket. We were working the day watch out of Unspent Summer Detail. My partner's Dave. He's new. He brought a phone. The boss is Captain Rue. My name's Puppy.
A woman watched the bus go by and started counting what was left of August. She got to nineteen and stopped. Her dog had gotten to today and stayed there.
