Today's field note from Sgt. Puppy and the morning watch at Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont.

This is the camp. Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont. Half the town set an alarm for two in the morning to lie in a wet field and watch the meteor shower. The dogs were already outside.
It was Wednesday, August 12th. It was fifty-five overnight in Camp Puppy Haven, clouds moving through, seventy-eight and easy by afternoon. We were working the night watch out of Lawn Chair Detail. My partner's Doris. The boss is Commander Hatch. My name's Puppy.
A man kept apologizing to his wife every time a cloud came over, like he'd arranged the sky himself and mismanaged it. The dog beside him never once looked up. He'd found the warm spot on the blanket. That was the whole assignment.
Sgt. Puppy's Field Notes are published most weekday mornings.
