Today's field note from Sgt. Puppy and the morning watch at Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont.
Someone set a cardboard box at the end of the driveway on Ridge Road. It said FREE GOURDS. By noon there were more gourds in it than when it started. This is Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont.
It was Friday, October 16th. It was gray and cold in Camp Puppy Haven, the ridge mostly bare, frost still on the stone wall at ten. We were working the day watch out of Roadside Box Detail. My partner’s Doris. The boss is Lieutenant Ella. My name’s Puppy.
A woman pulled over and studied the box for ten minutes. She took a gourd. She left a gourd. Doris says it was the same gourd.
Sgt. Puppy's Field Notes are published most weekday mornings.
