Today's field note from Sgt. Puppy and the morning watch at Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont.
Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont. The river road. The church clock, four minutes slow. The hardware store, leaf rakes out front. The town garage, plow frames going on the trucks. At the end of the drive, under the maple, the dogs.
It was Tuesday, October 13th. It was cold and clear in Camp Puppy Haven, frost on the windshields until nine. We were working the day watch out of Leaf Rake Deterrence. My partner’s Doris. The boss is Lieutenant Fig. My name’s Puppy.
A man raked the lawn at seven. By noon the maple had undone it. Doris lay down in the pile. Somebody had to show him.
Sgt. Puppy's Field Notes are published most weekday mornings.
