This is the camp. Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont. The leaves are down. The humans are banking hay bales along the foundation, the way their grandparents did. The bales smell like August. The dogs approve.
It was Wednesday, October 28th. It was gray and cold in Camp Puppy Haven, woodsmoke settling in the hollow. We were working the day watch out of Foundation Banking Inspection. My partner’s Murph. The boss is Lieutenant Clove. My name’s Puppy.
A man had checked the forecast four times before noon. Winter was still coming. Murph lay down on a bale and kept watch.
