Today's field note from Sgt. Puppy and the morning watch at Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont.
Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont. The town beach, the dock dragged up on the sand. The fire station, a sign out front for Saturday’s trunk-or-treat. The general store, candy corn by the register. The hills gone to sticks. And at the end of every driveway, a dog.
It was Tuesday, October 27th. It was thirty-four at dawn in Camp Puppy Haven, gray and still. We were working the day watch out of Costume Fitting Oversight. My partner’s Dave. He’s new. He brought a stuffed donkey. The boss is Captain Vera. My name’s Puppy.
A woman was fitting her retriever for a lobster suit. Third try. The retriever stood for it. Dave took a picture. Nobody filed a complaint.
Sgt. Puppy's Field Notes are published most weekday mornings.
