Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont. The Grange Hall. The sugarhouse, standing cold until March. Seven miles of fence line nobody ever finished. The dogs walk it anyway, every morning.
It was Thursday, September 10th. It was cool at dawn in Camp Puppy Haven, warm by noon, first color coming into the maples. We were working the day watch out of Fence Line Detail. My partner's Doris. The boss is Lieutenant Soot. My name's Puppy.
A woman was already worried about winter. The woodshed is full. We walked her past it twice.
