This is the camp. Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont. The float came out of the pond over the weekend. It's up on the bank now, ropes coiled on top of it. Nobody told the dogs.
It was Tuesday, September 8th. It was gray and mild in Camp Puppy Haven, low fifties at dawn, seventy by noon. We were working the day watch out of Swim Line Recovery. My partner's Murph. The boss is Captain Birch. My name's Puppy.
A man stood at the edge of the pond a while, looking at where the rope used to be. Murph went in anyway. The water hadn't heard about Labor Day.
