This is the camp. Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont. Somebody lit the first fire of the season last night. The whole house smelled like burning dust. The dogs moved closer anyway.
It was Wednesday, September 16th. It was crisp in Camp Puppy Haven, warm by noon. We were working the day watch out of First Fire Detail. My partner's Dave. He's new. He brought a stuffed rhino. The boss is Lieutenant Clove. My name's Puppy.
A man opened the stove door four times to check the draft. The draft was fine. He wasn't checking the draft. He was coping with a winter that hadn't arrived yet.
