Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont. One blinking light at the four corners. The bus garage, doors rolled up, engines run for the first time since June. The crickets have the night shift. Beyond that, it's us.
It was Thursday, August 13th. It was fifty-four degrees at dawn in Camp Puppy Haven, cool for August. We were working the morning watch out of Sweatshirt Weather Detail. My partner's The Goose. The boss is Lieutenant Wren. My name's Puppy.
A woman checked the thermometer twice, then went inside for a jacket. She stood in the yard wearing it, unsure whether to be pleased. The Goose had already found the one patch of sun and settled into it.
