Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont. Frost in the low meadow, gone by eight. The cider press running behind the orchard barn. One stoplight in town. It blinks yellow and means nothing. Past all of it, the dogs.
It was Friday, September 18th. It was forty-one degrees at dawn in Camp Puppy Haven and seventy by afternoon. We were working the day watch out of Wardrobe Revision Detail. My partner's The Goose. The boss is Lieutenant Fenn. My name's Puppy.
A woman left the house at dawn in a wool coat. By two she was carrying it like evidence. Her dog had worn the same coat all day. It fit fine.
