Today's field note from Sgt. Puppy and the morning watch at Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont.

A chest freezer quit sometime Sunday night. By noon the notice was up: forty pounds of blueberries, free, come now, bring a bowl. The driveway was empty by two. This is Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont.
It was Tuesday, August 4th. It was clear and eighty-one in Camp Puppy Haven, cool at first light. We were working the day watch out of Cold Storage Detail. My partner's The Goose. The boss is Lieutenant Spot. My name's Puppy.
A woman apologized to every car that pulled into her driveway. Nobody had come out of pity. They came because it was free and the morning was cool.
Sgt. Puppy's Field Notes are published most weekday mornings.
