Camp Puppy Haven, Vermont. A dirt road in. A screen door. The mudroom. The black flies that got past all three. The dogs were ready for them.
It was Thursday, May 21st. It was warm in Camp Puppy Haven, the flies thick by noon. We were working the day watch out of Black-Fly Buffer Squad. My partner's Murph. The boss is Captain Otis. My name's Puppy.
A man had spent forty dollars on chemical-free bug spray. The flies couldn't read the label. Murph could read the man.
